(January 15, 2015) Use MI School Data to create a word cloud depicting the careers your high school grads are pursuing. It’s a great conversation starter for counselors and students, and a fun way to communicate with board members and families in your district.
Mitch Fowler, Calhoun ISD’s school data expert, shared this idea. He downloads the Student Pathways report that includes the course of study for a high school’s graduates. Then he uses an online word cloud generator to show the majors its graduates are pursuing.
Student Pathways in only available with a secure login. Go to Other/Data Files in the left navigation; select Student Pathways from the report list at the top. Enter your school and email address, then choose Programs & Concentrations for the file type, and select the high school graduation year. (Tip: Don’t pick your most recent graduating class, because many of them haven’t yet decided on a major.) Submit the request, and shortly after you’ll receive an email with a link to the secure data file. Filter the file as you see fit, then copy and paste the selected field into the word cloud generator of your choice (we used www.wordle.net).
It’s simple! Thanks for this cool idea, Mitch!
